GHRH
A member of the glucagon family of proteins is encoded by this gene. The mature factor, known as somatoliberin, is created by cleaving the encoded preproprotein in the hypothalamus, where it functions to promote the release of growth hormone from the pituitary gland. Numerous tumor types have different somatoliberin receptors that can be inhibited by antagonists by binding to these receptors. Dwarfism is caused by mutations in this gene, whereas gigantism is caused by oversecretion of the protein it encodes.
