Cannabis contains psychotropic compounds called cannabinoids, most notably delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and its synthetic analogs. The G-protein coupled receptor family, which the cannabinoid receptors are a member of, inhibits adenylate cyclase activity in a dose-dependent, stereoselective, and pertussis toxin-sensitive manner. The two receptors have been discovered to be associated with the cannabinoid-induced CNS effects (such as changes in mood and cognition) felt by marijuana users. Prostaglandin production and control, as well as cannabinoid receptor signaling, are among the pathways connected to CNR1. G protein-coupled receptor activity and cannabinoid receptor activity are two GO annotations for this gene.
