SLC6A4
The serotonin neurotransmitter is transported into presynaptic neurons by this gene, which encodes a crucial membrane protein. Serotonin's action is stopped and recycled by the encoded protein in a sodium-dependent way. This protein is a member of the sodium:neurotransmitter symporter family and is a target of psychomotor stimulants like cocaine and amphetamines. The rate of serotonin uptake has been demonstrated to be influenced by a repeat length polymorphism in the promoter of this gene.
