SLC30A8
This gene encodes a zinc efflux transporter protein that contributes to the buildup of zinc in intracellular vesicles. Only the pancreas, particularly the Langerhans islets, express this gene at a high degree. In the secretory pathway granules of the insulin-secreting INS-1 cells, the encoded protein colocalizes with insulin. There are genetic variations of this gene that increase the risk of developing non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM).
