SLC10A1
This gene encodes a protein that is a member of the family of integral membrane glycoproteins called sodium/bile acid cotransporters. These proteins are involved in the enterohepatic transport of bile acids. The ileal sodium/bile acid cotransporter, which has an apical cell localization and absorbs bile acids from the intestinal lumen, bile duct, and kidney, and the liver-specific sodium/bile acid cotransporter, represented by this protein, which is found in the basolateral membranes of hepatocytes, are two homologous transporters that are involved in the reabsorption of bile acids. This protein is crucial for maintaining the homeostasis of cholesterol since bile acids are the catabolic byproduct of cholesterol metabolism.
