P2RX1
The proteins can act as ATP-gated ion channels, create homo- and heterotimers, and facilitate fast and selective permeability to cations. This protein is largely found in smooth muscle where it mediates synaptic transmission from neurons to smooth muscle and between neurons. It may also be the cause of sympathetic vasoconstriction in tiny arteries, arterioles, and the vas deferens. According to mouse research, this receptor is necessary for healthy male reproductive function. The promotion of apoptosis may potentially be aided by this protein.
