OPRM1
The mu opioid receptor, one of at least three opioid receptors in humans, is encoded by this gene (MOR). Endogenous opioid peptides and opioid analgesics like beta-endorphin and enkephalins primarily target the MOR. Through its modulation of the dopamine system, the MOR also plays a significant part in reliance to other addictive substances, including nicotine, cocaine, and alcohol. The MOR has been linked to opioid and alcohol addiction as well as different levels of pain sensitivity, however there is conflicting evidence that it plays a causative role. Even though the standard MOR is a member of the superfamily of G-protein-coupled receptors with seven transmembrane domains, some of its isoforms only have six.
