MTNR1B
One of two high affinity receptors for melatonin, the main hormone released by the pineal gland, is encoded by this gene. This gene product is a 7-transmembrane G-protein coupled receptor that is an integral membrane protein. Although RT-PCR is required for this identification, the retina and brain are where it is primarily discovered. It is believed to have a role in the retina's light-dependent processes as well as the neurobiological effects of melatonin.
