MC1R
The receptor protein for melanocyte-stimulating hormone is encoded by this gene without introns (MSH). The seven pass transmembrane G protein coupled receptor encoded for regulates melanogenesis. Increased pheomelanin production, which results in lighter skin and hair color, is linked to gene mutations that cause a loss of function. Pheomelanin may contribute to UV-induced skin damage by producing free radicals when exposed to UV light, but eumelanin is photoprotective. The activation of the receptor and stimulation of eumelanin production occur when MSH binds to its receptor. This receptor is a hereditary risk factor for both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer and a key determinant of sun sensitivity.
