HLA-A belongs to the HLA class I heavy chain paralogues. A heavy chain and a light chain form a heterodimer in this class I molecule (beta-2 microglobulin). The membrane serves as the anchor for the hefty chain. By providing peptides from the endoplasmic reticulum lumen for cytotoxic T cells to detect, class I molecules play a crucial role in the immune system.
