CD86
A type I membrane protein that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily is produced by this gene. This protein, which is produced by antigen-presenting cells, binds to the CD28 antigen and the cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 on the surface of T cells. This protein's binding to the CD28 antigen serves as a costimulatory signal to activate T cells. When this protein and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 bind together, T-cell activation is negatively regulated, which reduces the immunological response.
