CCR5
The beta chemokine receptor protein that this gene produces is projected to be a seven transmembrane protein, much like G protein-coupled receptors. This protein, which is produced by T cells and macrophages, is a crucial co-receptor for HIV and other macrophage-tropic viruses to enter host cells. This gene's defective alleles have been linked to resistance to HIV infection. Monocyte chemoattractant protein 2 (MCP-2), macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha (MIP-1 alpha), macrophage inflammatory protein 1 beta (MIP-1 beta), and regulated on activation normal T produced and secreted protein are among the ligands for this receptor. A promyeloblastic cell line also expressed this gene, indicating that this protein may be involved in granulocyte lineage proliferation and differentiation.
