ABCB11
This gene encodes a membrane-associated protein that belongs to the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. Different substances are transported across extracellular and intracellular membranes by ABC proteins. The MDR/TAP subfamily contains this protein as a member. The multidrug resistance of the MDR/TAP subfamily is a factor. The main canalicular bile salt export pump in humans is a protein that is expressed by this gene. A kind of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestases, a category of inherited illnesses with severe cholestatic liver disease from early childhood, are brought on by mutations in this gene.
