Research Highlights
A major source of B cell malignancies, germinal centers are significant locations for antibody diversification and affinity development. Uncertainty surrounds the cues that encourage this restriction. A Gα13-coupled receptor called P2RY8 controls the expansion of B cells in lymphoid organs and mediates their restriction of migration.

P2RY8 overexpression in cells and animals inhibited the growth of plasma cells and strengthened the negative selection of developing B cells with DNA reactivity. These findings reveal a function for P2RY8 in the development of lupus and immunological tolerance.
