A G protein-coupled receptor known as patched, which is a receptor for hedgehog proteins, interacts with the protein produced by this gene. After being activated by a hedgehog protein/patched protein combination, the encoded protein transmits signals to other proteins. Ciliopathies and the development of the ureteric collection system are two of its linked routes.
