MTNR1A
One of two high affinity receptors for melatonin, the main hormone released by the pineal gland, is encoded by this gene. This G-protein coupled, 7-transmembrane receptor is in charge of the melatonin effects on mammalian circadian rhythm and day length-dependent reproductive changes. The receptor is an easily identifiable integral membrane protein that is localized to two distinct parts of the brain. While the hypophysial pars tuberalis may be in charge of the melatonin's reproductive effects, the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus appears to be engaged in circadian rhythm.
