FFAR2

Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), a key byproduct of dietary fiber digestion, activate this G protein-coupled receptor, which controls intestinal immunity as well as the body's overall energy homeostasis. The gut microbiota of omnivorous mammals, which breaks down dietary fibers, is principally responsible for producing the short chain fatty acids acetate, propionate, and butyrate. SCFAs function as both energy producers and signaling molecules. The G(i/o)-alpha family of G proteins, which are pertussis toxin-sensitive, as well as the Gq family are likely connected to that G protein-coupled receptor. When it is activated, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate is produced, intracellular calcium is mobilized, the MAPK3/ERK1 and MAPK1/ERK2 kinases are phosphorylated, and intracellular cAMP buildup is inhibited.
