AHR

This gene encodes a protein that is a ligand-activated helix-loop-helix transcription factor that controls how the body reacts to planar aromatic hydrocarbons. It has been demonstrated that this receptor controls xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes such cytochrome P450. The encoded protein is locked away in the cytoplasm prior to ligand binding; after ligand binding, the protein travels to the nucleus and activates transcription of the target genes.
