    Applications
Phototransduction is mediated by the serine/threonine-specific protein kinase known as G-protein-coupled receptor kinase 7 (GRK7). During high acuity color vision, this enzyme catalyzes the phosphorylation of cone (color) photopsins in retinal cones, mostly in the fovea. A member of the G protein-coupled receptor kinase family is GRK7. Mammalian retinal cone cells are the primary home of GRK7, where it phosphorylates light-activated photopsins, which are G protein-coupled receptors that detect red, green, and blue light. The capacity of the enzyme to identify color opsins in cone outer segment disk membranes is regulated by the post-translational modification of GRK7 through α-carboxyl methylation and geranylgeranylation. The customized GRK7 stable cell line can be used in antibody discovery and development, potential drug candidate screening and signaling pathway researches.

    Research Highlights

G protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) phosphorylate photoactivated visual pigments in rods and cones of vertebrates, which is necessary for continued visual function.

Zebrafish larvae that have either Grk1b or Grk7a removed have noticeably reduced recovery rates in response to subsequent light bursts. This decline was similar for grk1b- and grk7a-/-larvae and indicates, for the first time, that both Grk1b and Grk7a are important for the cessation of zebrafish cone visual signals.
